We hope you enjoyed our blog for April, all about weddings, traditions and everything in between!
Let’s talk Eid! Being from a Sikh background, but growing up with a Muslim best friend, I always knew about the significance of Eid. This is where my friend would always have special ‘Eid’ clothes, family gatherings, food galore! I used to love hearing about what gifts she was due to get and how the celebrations would commence.
My Dad, who was a social bird, had so many friends! His friends celebrating Eid would always come to him with the special Byriani made the Pakistani way. This I am told is a real process! Where lamb and rice are layered one by one, and cooked slowly in a huge metal pot. This would be something my Dad would always look forward to, he would come home saying how much he enjoyed celebrating Eid!
Our roots are in Amritsar, where the border for India and Pakistan is, and I have always been fascinated how culturally similar our Sikh traditions are with our Muslim brothers and sisters. It all made sense to me when I learned about Partition.
I am so happy to know of and be able to celebrate Eid with my friends, and even more excited to be able to offer henna to enhance the celebrations! I knew henna was a very important part of Eid, but this was particularly highlighted in our 1st and 2nd year in Selfridges. We had a small counter, 1m2, and literally just henna! No products and very little space, but we had queues on the first Eid we were in store and from then on I understood the significance of henna on Eid.
I LOVE how henna is associated with so many auspicious occasions. Weddings, Diwali, Eid, Navratri, and so many more! Henna also has affiliation with my favourite things in life, happiness, celebration, prosperity, luck and good fortune! A form of colour and expression that has been relevant for centuries, and I get to work with this everyday!
